How the guides are organized

There are two kinds of guide. A symptom guide starts from what you feel ("I have side pain") and works through likely causes, red flags and home care. A condition guide starts from a diagnosis ("kidney stones") and explains how it works, how it is diagnosed and treated, and what to expect. Most symptom guides link to the conditions that cause them, and the other way around.

Every guide opens with a short answer and a triage box that sorts warning signs into four levels: call 911, see a doctor within a day or two, book a routine visit, or manage at home.
