Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a contagious viral infection, usually caused by Coxsackievirus, that most often affects young children. It causes characteristic mouth sores and rash on hands and feet.

Symptoms
- Fever and sore throat first
- Painful mouth sores
- Rash on palms, soles, sometimes buttocks
- Loss of appetite
- Irritability in young children
Treatment
- Supportive care — fluids, soft foods, pain relief
- Avoid acidic or spicy foods (worsen mouth pain)
- Topical anesthetics for mouth pain
- Usually resolves in 7–10 days
Prevention
- Hand washing
- Avoid sharing utensils, cups
- Keep symptomatic children home from school
