Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a contagious viral infection, usually caused by Coxsackievirus, that most often affects young children. It causes characteristic mouth sores and rash on hands and feet.

Symptoms

  • Fever and sore throat first
  • Painful mouth sores
  • Rash on palms, soles, sometimes buttocks
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritability in young children

Treatment

  • Supportive care — fluids, soft foods, pain relief
  • Avoid acidic or spicy foods (worsen mouth pain)
  • Topical anesthetics for mouth pain
  • Usually resolves in 7–10 days

Prevention

  • Hand washing
  • Avoid sharing utensils, cups
  • Keep symptomatic children home from school
