Animal Bite

Animal bites can cause significant injury and infection. Dog and cat bites are most common; cat bites have a higher infection rate. Rabies risk depends on the animal and exposure type.

First Aid

  1. Wash thoroughly with soap and water for at least 5 minutes
  2. Apply pressure to control bleeding
  3. Cover with clean dressing
  4. Seek medical care for most bites — especially cat or human bites, deep wounds, or wounds on hands/face

Medical Care

  • Wound cleaning and exploration
  • Antibiotics (often amoxicillin-clavulanate)
  • Tetanus update
  • Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis for wild animal bites or unvaccinated dogs/cats
  • Reporting to public health authorities
