Animal Bite
Animal bites can cause significant injury and infection. Dog and cat bites are most common; cat bites have a higher infection rate. Rabies risk depends on the animal and exposure type.

First Aid
- Wash thoroughly with soap and water for at least 5 minutes
- Apply pressure to control bleeding
- Cover with clean dressing
- Seek medical care for most bites — especially cat or human bites, deep wounds, or wounds on hands/face
Medical Care
- Wound cleaning and exploration
- Antibiotics (often amoxicillin-clavulanate)
- Tetanus update
- Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis for wild animal bites or unvaccinated dogs/cats
- Reporting to public health authorities
