Fever in Children

Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring children to the doctor. Most fevers are viral and self-limited, but certain ages and patterns warrant urgent care.

When to Call a Doctor

Urgent: any fever in an infant under 3 months; fever with poor feeding, lethargy, stiff neck, rash that doesn't blanch, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, dehydration, or seizure.

Home Care

  • Keep hydrated
  • Acetaminophen for comfort (ibuprofen for over 6 months)
  • Light clothing, comfortable temperature
  • Don't use aspirin (Reye syndrome risk)
