Pericoronitis

Pericoronitis is inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding a partially erupted tooth, most often a wisdom tooth. It causes pain, swelling, and sometimes infection.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the back of the mouth
  • Swelling of gum around partially erupted tooth
  • Bad taste or odor
  • Difficulty opening mouth
  • Sometimes fever

Treatment

  • Warm salt water rinses
  • Good oral hygiene
  • NSAIDs for pain
  • Antibiotics if infection spreads
  • Removal of the wisdom tooth (definitive)
