Tooth decay (dental caries) occurs when bacteria in dental plaque produce acid that erodes tooth enamel. It is the most common chronic disease worldwide but is largely preventable.

Prevention
- Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily
- Limit sugary and acidic foods/drinks
- Drink fluoridated water
- Regular dental cleanings every 6 months
- Dental sealants for children
- Don't put babies to bed with bottles of milk or juice
Treatment
- Fluoride treatments (early decay)
- Fillings
- Crowns for larger decay
- Root canal if pulp is involved
- Extraction for non-restorable teeth
