Sarcopenia

Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function with aging. It contributes to falls, frailty, and disability but can be prevented and partly reversed with exercise and adequate protein intake.

Prevention and Treatment

  • Resistance (strength) training — most important
  • Adequate protein intake (often 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day in older adults)
  • Vitamin D supplementation if deficient
  • Address underlying conditions and medications
  • Treat sleep, mood, and nutrition
