Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral illness spread by Aedes mosquitoes. It causes high fever and severe joint pain that can persist for weeks or months.

Treatment

  • Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs until dengue is ruled out (risk of bleeding)
  • Joint pain may require longer-term anti-inflammatories

Prevention

  • Avoid mosquito bites in endemic areas
  • Insect repellent (DEET, picaridin)
  • Long sleeves, screens, bed nets
  • Eliminate standing water around the home
  • Vaccine available in some countries
