West Nile Virus
West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States. About 80% of infected people have no symptoms; less than 1% develop severe neurologic illness.

Symptoms
Most infections
- No symptoms (80%)
- Or mild flu-like illness with fever, headache, body aches, sometimes rash
Severe neurologic disease (<1%)
- Meningitis or encephalitis
- High fever, stiff neck
- Confusion, seizures
- Weakness or paralysis (sometimes resembling polio)
Treatment
- No specific antiviral — supportive care
- Hospitalization for severe cases
Prevention
- Insect repellent
- Long sleeves and pants at dawn/dusk
- Window screens
- Eliminate standing water
