West Nile Virus

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne disease in the United States. About 80% of infected people have no symptoms; less than 1% develop severe neurologic illness.

Symptoms

Most infections

  • No symptoms (80%)
  • Or mild flu-like illness with fever, headache, body aches, sometimes rash

Severe neurologic disease (<1%)

  • Meningitis or encephalitis
  • High fever, stiff neck
  • Confusion, seizures
  • Weakness or paralysis (sometimes resembling polio)

Treatment

  • No specific antiviral — supportive care
  • Hospitalization for severe cases

Prevention

  • Insect repellent
  • Long sleeves and pants at dawn/dusk
  • Window screens
  • Eliminate standing water
