Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes in parts of Africa and South America. Severe disease causes jaundice, bleeding, and shock. A highly effective vaccine exists.

Symptoms

Mild form (most cases)

  • Fever, chills
  • Headache, muscle aches
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Resolves within a few days

Severe form

  • Brief recovery followed by jaundice (yellow skin)
  • Severe liver and kidney problems
  • Bleeding from gums, nose, GI tract
  • Shock and multi-organ failure

Treatment

  • No specific antiviral — supportive care
  • Fluids, oxygen, blood products as needed
  • ICU care for severe cases

Prevention

  • Single-dose vaccine providing lifelong protection
  • Required for travel to many endemic countries
  • Mosquito avoidance measures
