Morning Stiffness

Morning stiffness is reduced joint or muscle mobility on waking. Brief stiffness (<30 minutes) is typical of osteoarthritis or normal aging; prolonged stiffness suggests inflammatory arthritis.

Duration Matters

  • Brief (under 30 min) — osteoarthritis, minor strain
  • Prolonged (over 30 min) — rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, ankylosing spondylitis, other inflammatory conditions

When to See a Doctor

  • Morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes for weeks
  • Joint swelling and warmth
  • Symptoms affecting multiple joints
