Arm Stiffness

Arm stiffness — reduced ease of moving the arm or its joints — has many possible causes from muscle strain to neurologic conditions. The pattern often suggests the cause.

Common Causes

  • Muscle strain or overuse
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Arthritis of shoulder, elbow, or wrist
  • Rotator cuff problems
  • Tendinitis
  • Cervical spine problems referring to arm
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke or other neurologic disease

When to See a Doctor

  • Severe or progressive stiffness
  • Associated weakness or numbness
  • Significant impact on daily life
  • Sudden onset (call 911 with other neurologic signs)
