Hereditary Spherocytosis

Hereditary spherocytosis is an inherited condition causing red blood cells to be sphere-shaped instead of disc-shaped. These abnormal cells are destroyed by the spleen, causing chronic hemolytic anemia.

Symptoms

  • Anemia of variable severity
  • Jaundice
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Gallstones (from bilirubin)
  • Aplastic crises with viral infections

Treatment

  • Folic acid supplementation
  • Splenectomy for severe disease (curative for anemia)
  • Vaccinations and prophylactic antibiotics if spleen removed
  • Cholecystectomy if gallstones develop
