Anovulation

Anovulation means the ovary doesn't release an egg during a menstrual cycle. It is a common cause of irregular periods and infertility.

Causes

  • PCOS (most common)
  • Hypothalamic dysfunction (stress, low body weight, intense exercise)
  • Hyperprolactinemia
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency
  • Perimenopause

Treatment

  • Treat underlying cause
  • Ovulation induction (letrozole, clomiphene) when fertility is desired
  • Hormonal contraception for cycle regulation
  • Lifestyle changes (weight, stress, exercise)
