Speech problems take many forms — slurred speech, difficulty finding words, stuttering, or voice problems. Sudden speech difficulty is a medical emergency.

Sudden slurred speech, inability to speak, or trouble finding words — likely stroke. Use FAST test.

Causes

  • Stroke or TIA
  • Bell's palsy (facial weakness affecting articulation)
  • Neurodegenerative disease (Parkinson's, ALS, dementia)
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Brain tumors
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Migraine aura
  • Severe intoxication
