Chronic Diarrhea

Chronic diarrhea is loose stools persisting for more than 4 weeks. Causes range from common (IBS, dietary) to serious (IBD, malabsorption, infections).

Common Causes

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Microscopic colitis
  • Lactose or other intolerance
  • SIBO
  • Medications
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Chronic infections (parasites)
  • Colorectal cancer (older adults)

When to See a Doctor

  • Diarrhea over 4 weeks
  • Weight loss, fever, blood in stool
  • Nighttime diarrhea
  • Symptoms after age 50
