Dandruff

Dandruff is a very common scalp condition involving white flakes and sometimes itching. It is usually caused by seborrheic dermatitis — a mild inflammation often triggered by Malassezia yeast and oil production.

Treatment

  • Medicated shampoos — alternate or rotate:
  • Zinc pyrithione
  • Ketoconazole
  • Selenium sulfide
  • Coal tar
  • Salicylic acid
  • Leave shampoo on for 5 minutes before rinsing
  • For stubborn cases, topical corticosteroid lotion
