Rib Fracture
A rib fracture is a broken rib bone. It is painful and can take 4–6 weeks to heal. Pain control is essential to allow deep breathing and prevent pneumonia.

Symptoms
- Sharp chest pain at the rib
- Pain with breathing, coughing, or twisting
- Tenderness on pressing the rib

Difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, multiple fractures (flail chest), or severe abdominal pain.
Treatment
- Pain control — essential to allow deep breathing
- Incentive spirometry
- Activity as tolerated; cough and breathe deeply often
- Most heal in 4–6 weeks
