Rib Fracture

A rib fracture is a broken rib bone. It is painful and can take 4–6 weeks to heal. Pain control is essential to allow deep breathing and prevent pneumonia.

Symptoms

  • Sharp chest pain at the rib
  • Pain with breathing, coughing, or twisting
  • Tenderness on pressing the rib

Difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, multiple fractures (flail chest), or severe abdominal pain.

Treatment

  • Pain control — essential to allow deep breathing
  • Incentive spirometry
  • Activity as tolerated; cough and breathe deeply often
  • Most heal in 4–6 weeks
