Rhinitis

Rhinitis is inflammation of the lining of the nose, causing congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching. It can be allergic, non-allergic, or related to medications.

Types

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) — triggered by allergens
  • Non-allergic rhinitis — irritants, temperature changes, food, hormones
  • Vasomotor rhinitis — non-allergic with nasal vessel sensitivity
  • Atrophic rhinitis — thinning of nasal lining
  • Drug-induced (rhinitis medicamentosa) — rebound from decongestant overuse

Treatment

  • Avoid known triggers
  • Saline nasal sprays and rinses
  • Intranasal corticosteroids
  • Antihistamines (oral or nasal)
  • Decongestants short-term only
  • Allergen immunotherapy for severe allergic rhinitis
