Hip Fracture

A hip fracture is a break in the upper part of the femur. Most occur in older adults from falls and require prompt surgical repair to reduce complications and mortality.

Symptoms

  • Severe hip or groin pain after a fall
  • Inability to bear weight or stand
  • Affected leg often shortened and rotated outward
  • Bruising and swelling

Treatment

  • Surgery within 24–48 hours (improves outcomes)
  • Internal fixation (screws, plate, rod) or hip replacement depending on fracture type
  • Pain control, DVT prevention
  • Early mobilization and physical therapy
  • Treat osteoporosis to prevent future fractures

Prevention

  • Falls prevention (exercise, home safety, vision check, medication review)
  • Osteoporosis screening and treatment
  • Adequate calcium and vitamin D
