Hip Fracture
A hip fracture is a break in the upper part of the femur. Most occur in older adults from falls and require prompt surgical repair to reduce complications and mortality.

Symptoms
- Severe hip or groin pain after a fall
- Inability to bear weight or stand
- Affected leg often shortened and rotated outward
- Bruising and swelling
Treatment
- Surgery within 24–48 hours (improves outcomes)
- Internal fixation (screws, plate, rod) or hip replacement depending on fracture type
- Pain control, DVT prevention
- Early mobilization and physical therapy
- Treat osteoporosis to prevent future fractures
Prevention
- Falls prevention (exercise, home safety, vision check, medication review)
- Osteoporosis screening and treatment
- Adequate calcium and vitamin D
