Flail Chest
Flail chest occurs when three or more adjacent ribs are fractured in two or more places, creating a 'flail segment' that moves paradoxically with breathing. It causes severe respiratory distress and underlying lung injury is common.

Treatment
- Pain control to allow breathing
- Oxygen and sometimes mechanical ventilation
- Surgical rib fixation for selected patients (improves outcomes)
- Treat associated lung injuries
