Pulmonary Contusion

Pulmonary contusion is a bruise of the lung from blunt chest trauma. The injured lung leaks fluid and blood into the airways, impairing oxygen exchange. Severity ranges from mild to life-threatening.

Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain at injury site
  • Cough, sometimes with blood
  • Decreased oxygen saturation
  • Symptoms may worsen over 24–48 hours

Treatment

  • Supportive care — oxygen, pain control to allow deep breathing
  • Mechanical ventilation in severe cases
  • Careful fluid management (avoid over-resuscitation)
  • Treatment of associated injuries (rib fractures, hemothorax)
