Paralysis is the loss of the ability to move some or all parts of the body, with or without sensory loss. Sudden paralysis is a medical emergency.

Causes

  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Bell's palsy (facial)
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • ALS
  • Severe nerve injury
  • Polio (rare in vaccinated populations)

Treatment and Rehabilitation

  • Emergency treatment of the underlying cause
  • Physical therapy, occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy if needed
  • Assistive devices and home modifications
  • Treatment of complications (skin, bladder, bowel, contractures)
