Pain (General)

Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. Acute pain warns of tissue damage; chronic pain (lasting 3+ months) is a condition in its own right that often needs multimodal treatment.

Types

  • Acute — recent injury, infection, or illness; usually resolves
  • Chronic — lasting 3+ months
  • Nociceptive — from tissue damage (cut, fracture, inflammation)
  • Neuropathic — from nerve damage (burning, shock-like)
  • Mixed

Treatment

  • Treat underlying cause when possible
  • Acetaminophen, NSAIDs for nociceptive pain
  • Anticonvulsants, antidepressants for neuropathic pain
  • Physical therapy, exercise
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Procedures (injections, nerve blocks)
  • Opioids only for selected acute pain or cancer pain
