Nail Discoloration
Nail color changes have many causes. Some patterns suggest specific conditions, from fungal infection to systemic disease.
Table of Contents
Common Patterns
- Yellow — fungal infection, smoking, nail polish staining
- Green — Pseudomonas infection
- Black/dark brown streak — trauma, melanoma (urgent if not from trauma)
- Half white, half pink/brown (Lindsay's) — kidney disease
- White (leukonychia) — minor trauma, sometimes low albumin
- Blue — low oxygen or medication-related
When to See a Doctor
Dark streaks not from clear trauma, persistent green/yellow nails, or nail changes with systemic symptoms warrant evaluation.
