Venous Ulcers

Venous leg ulcers are chronic, slow-healing wounds caused by poor return of blood from the legs (chronic venous insufficiency). They are the most common chronic leg ulcers and are treated primarily with compression therapy.

Features

  • Shallow ulcers, usually on the inner lower leg above the ankle
  • Irregular borders
  • Surrounding skin discoloration and itching
  • Often painful but not always

Treatment

  • Compression therapy (essential — bandages or stockings)
  • Leg elevation
  • Wound dressings
  • Treat infection if present
  • Endovenous procedures for underlying venous reflux
  • Skin grafts for large non-healing ulcers
