Transverse Myelitis
Transverse myelitis is an inflammatory disorder affecting a segment of the spinal cord, causing weakness, sensory changes, and bowel/bladder problems. It can develop quickly and requires urgent evaluation.

Symptoms
- Weakness in legs (sometimes arms)
- Sensory changes — numbness, tingling, burning
- Bladder and bowel dysfunction
- Back or abdominal pain
- Often progresses over hours to days
Causes
- Multiple sclerosis
- Neuromyelitis optica
- Infections (viral, bacterial)
- Autoimmune diseases (lupus, Sjögren's)
- Post-vaccination (rare)
- Idiopathic
Treatment
- High-dose IV corticosteroids
- Plasma exchange for severe cases
- IVIG in selected cases
- Treatment of underlying disease
- Rehabilitation therapy
