Sunburn

Sunburn is skin damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, usually from the sun. Beyond short-term discomfort, it accelerates skin aging and increases skin cancer risk.

Quick Facts

  • ICD-10: L55
  • Cause: UV radiation

Treatment

  • Cool baths or compresses
  • Aloe vera and moisturizers
  • NSAIDs (ibuprofen) for pain and inflammation
  • Adequate fluid intake
  • Don't pop blisters
  • Avoid further sun until healed

When to Seek Care

Seek medical care for severe sunburn with high fever, chills, dehydration, blistering over large areas, or signs of infection.

Prevention

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, reapplied every 2 hours
  • Seek shade, especially 10 AM–4 PM
  • Sun-protective clothing and wide-brimmed hat
  • No tanning beds
  • Be aware that UV exposure happens through clouds and reflective surfaces (water, sand, snow)
