Hemothorax

Hemothorax is the accumulation of blood in the pleural space between the lung and chest wall. Most cases follow trauma. It can rapidly impair breathing and circulation and is a medical emergency.

Emergency

Chest injury with breathing difficulty, severe pain, or shock requires immediate 911 response.

Symptoms

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid breathing or heart rate
  • Pale, cool, or clammy skin
  • Anxiety, restlessness
  • Low blood pressure

Causes

  • Chest trauma (blunt or penetrating)
  • Surgery
  • Lung or chest wall cancers
  • Pulmonary embolism (rare)
  • Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medications

Treatment

  • Chest tube drainage
  • Surgery to control bleeding if needed
  • Blood transfusion if significant blood loss
  • Treatment of underlying cause
