Hemothorax
Hemothorax is the accumulation of blood in the pleural space between the lung and chest wall. Most cases follow trauma. It can rapidly impair breathing and circulation and is a medical emergency.

Emergency
Chest injury with breathing difficulty, severe pain, or shock requires immediate 911 response.
Symptoms
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Rapid breathing or heart rate
- Pale, cool, or clammy skin
- Anxiety, restlessness
- Low blood pressure
Causes
- Chest trauma (blunt or penetrating)
- Surgery
- Lung or chest wall cancers
- Pulmonary embolism (rare)
- Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant medications
Treatment
- Chest tube drainage
- Surgery to control bleeding if needed
- Blood transfusion if significant blood loss
- Treatment of underlying cause
