Oral Candidiasis (Thrush)

Oral candidiasis (thrush) is a fungal infection of the mouth caused by Candida species. It is common in infants, denture wearers, immunosuppressed people, and those on antibiotics or inhaled steroids.

Appearance

  • White creamy patches on tongue, cheeks, or palate
  • Patches that wipe off, leaving red sore areas
  • Soreness, burning, or trouble swallowing
  • Loss of taste

Treatment

  • Nystatin or clotrimazole troches
  • Fluconazole orally for resistant or extensive disease
  • Treat underlying cause (rinse mouth after inhaled steroids; check for diabetes; address denture fit)
