Angular Cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is inflammation and cracking at the corners of the mouth, often from yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, or nutritional deficiency.

Causes

  • Candida (yeast) overgrowth
  • Staphylococcal infection
  • Saliva pooling (poorly fitted dentures, lip licking)
  • Iron, B-vitamin (especially B2), or zinc deficiency
  • Dry weather or wind exposure
  • Drooling during sleep

Treatment

  • Antifungal cream (clotrimazole, miconazole)
  • Topical antibiotic if bacterial
  • Combination antifungal + low-potency steroid for stubborn cases
  • Address dentures and oral hygiene
  • Petroleum jelly or lip balm to protect
  • Correct vitamin or mineral deficiencies
