Nystagmus

Nystagmus is involuntary repetitive movement of the eyes, usually side to side. It can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired from neurologic or vestibular conditions.

Causes

  • Congenital nystagmus
  • Inner ear disorders (BPPV, Ménière's)
  • Brain conditions (stroke, MS, tumors)
  • Medications (anticonvulsants, sedatives)
  • Alcohol intoxication
  • Albinism, retinal disorders

Treatment

  • Treat underlying cause
  • Glasses or contacts for refractive errors
  • Medications (gabapentin, baclofen) in selected cases
  • Surgery to reposition eye muscles (rarely)
  • Low-vision aids
