Neonatal Sepsis

Neonatal sepsis is a serious bloodstream infection in newborns. Early-onset (first 72 hours) is usually from delivery; late-onset is often hospital-acquired. Prompt antibiotic treatment is essential.

Warning Signs

  • Temperature instability (high or low)
  • Poor feeding
  • Lethargy or irritability
  • Rapid breathing, grunting
  • Pale or mottled skin
  • Jaundice

Treatment

  • Immediate broad-spectrum antibiotics
  • Supportive care (fluids, oxygen, ventilation)
  • Identify and treat source
  • NICU monitoring
