Nasal Vestibulitis

Nasal vestibulitis is inflammation or infection of the front opening of the nose (the nasal vestibule), often from Staphylococcus aureus and small trauma like nose-picking or hair removal.

Symptoms

  • Painful pimple, scab, or crust just inside the nostril
  • Redness and swelling
  • Tenderness

Warning

Severe nasal vestibulitis with extending facial swelling, fever, or eye symptoms can rarely lead to cavernous sinus thrombosis. Seek urgent care for these features.

Treatment

  • Warm compresses
  • Topical antibiotic ointment (mupirocin)
  • Oral antibiotics for spreading or severe infection
  • Avoid picking and excessive hair removal
