Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer of the lining surrounding the lungs, abdomen, or heart. It is strongly associated with asbestos exposure, often occurring decades after exposure.

Symptoms

Pleural mesothelioma (most common)

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Pleural fluid (effusion)
  • Cough
  • Weight loss, fatigue

Peritoneal mesothelioma

  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea, bowel changes

Diagnosis

  • Imaging (chest X-ray, CT, MRI, PET)
  • Pleural fluid analysis
  • Tissue biopsy with immunohistochemistry (definitive)

Treatment

  • Surgery (extrapleural pneumonectomy or pleurectomy)
  • Chemotherapy (often pemetrexed + cisplatin)
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunotherapy (now standard for many patients)
  • Palliative drainage for pleural effusions
  • Clinical trials
