Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer of the lining surrounding the lungs, abdomen, or heart. It is strongly associated with asbestos exposure, often occurring decades after exposure.

Symptoms
Pleural mesothelioma (most common)
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Pleural fluid (effusion)
- Cough
- Weight loss, fatigue
Peritoneal mesothelioma
- Abdominal pain and swelling
- Weight loss
- Nausea, bowel changes
Diagnosis
- Imaging (chest X-ray, CT, MRI, PET)
- Pleural fluid analysis
- Tissue biopsy with immunohistochemistry (definitive)
Treatment
- Surgery (extrapleural pneumonectomy or pleurectomy)
- Chemotherapy (often pemetrexed + cisplatin)
- Radiation therapy
- Immunotherapy (now standard for many patients)
- Palliative drainage for pleural effusions
- Clinical trials
