Meniscal Tear

The meniscus is a wedge of cartilage that cushions the knee joint. Tears can occur from sports injuries (sudden twisting) or degeneration with age.

Symptoms

  • Pain along the joint line
  • Swelling, often delayed 24–48 hours
  • Catching or locking
  • Sensation of knee 'giving way'
  • Difficulty fully bending or straightening the knee

Treatment

  • RICE, NSAIDs initially
  • Physical therapy
  • Many degenerative tears respond to conservative care
  • Arthroscopic surgery for mechanical symptoms (catching, locking) or large tears in younger patients
  • Meniscus repair preferred to resection when possible
