Baker's Cyst

A Baker's cyst (popliteal cyst) is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee, usually from arthritis or knee injury. Many are asymptomatic; some cause discomfort, and rupture can mimic blood clots.

Symptoms

  • Bulge behind the knee, especially when standing
  • Tightness or pressure
  • Knee stiffness
  • Pain that worsens with activity
  • If ruptured — calf pain and swelling that can mimic DVT

Treatment

  • Treat underlying knee problem (arthritis, meniscus tear)
  • NSAIDs
  • Activity modification, compression
  • Aspiration and steroid injection
  • Surgery rarely needed
