Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), also called fetal growth restriction, is when the fetus's estimated weight is below the 10th percentile for gestational age. It can be caused by maternal, placental, or fetal factors.

Common Causes
- Placental insufficiency (most common)
- Maternal hypertension and preeclampsia
- Smoking, alcohol, drug use
- Chronic maternal conditions (kidney disease, diabetes, autoimmune)
- Multiple pregnancy
- Fetal chromosomal abnormalities
- Infections (CMV, toxoplasmosis)
Management
- Frequent ultrasound monitoring of growth and Doppler
- Non-stress tests and biophysical profiles
- Timed delivery balancing risks of prematurity vs continued growth restriction
- Treat underlying maternal conditions
