Gestational Hypertension

Gestational hypertension is the new onset of high blood pressure after 20 weeks of pregnancy in someone who was previously normotensive. It requires careful monitoring as it can progress to preeclampsia.

Warning Signs (Preeclampsia)

Seek emergency care for:
  • Severe headache
  • Vision changes
  • Right upper abdominal pain
  • Sudden swelling of face/hands
  • Decreased fetal movement

Treatment

  • Blood pressure medications safe in pregnancy (labetalol, nifedipine, methyldopa)
  • Delivery at 37 weeks if blood pressure remains elevated
  • Earlier delivery for preeclampsia or fetal concerns
