Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is severe, sharp pain in the back of the throat, tongue, tonsils, or ear from irritation of the glossopharyngeal nerve. It is rare but treatable.

  • Sharp, stabbing pain in throat, tongue, ear, or jaw
  • Triggered by swallowing, talking, coughing, yawning
  • Brief episodes

Treatment

  • Carbamazepine or other anticonvulsants
  • Nerve blocks
  • Microvascular decompression in refractory cases
