Postherpetic Neuralgia
Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is chronic nerve pain that persists after a shingles rash heals. Risk increases with age and severity of acute shingles.

- Burning, stabbing, or aching pain in the area of prior shingles
- Sensitivity to touch
- Itching
- Can last months to years
Treatment
- Gabapentin, pregabalin
- Tricyclic antidepressants (nortriptyline)
- Lidocaine or capsaicin patches
- Opioids in selected refractory cases
- Nerve blocks
Prevention
- Shingrix vaccine (recommended for adults 50+)
- Early antiviral treatment of shingles
