Erysipelas

Erysipelas is a bacterial skin infection of the upper layers, typically caused by Group A Streptococcus. It features a sharply demarcated, raised red rash and may have systemic symptoms.

Distinguishing Features

  • Bright red, well-demarcated, raised rash with a clear border
  • Most often on the legs or face
  • Often preceded by fever and chills
  • Tender, warm, swollen skin

Cellulitis, by contrast, has poorly defined borders and is deeper.

Treatment

  • Oral antibiotics (penicillin or amoxicillin) for most cases
  • IV antibiotics for severe disease or facial involvement
  • Elevation, rest
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Treat predisposing factors (lymphedema, skin breaks)
