Endometrial Polyps

Endometrial polyps are growths attached to the inner wall of the uterus that extend into the uterine cavity. Most are benign but can cause abnormal bleeding and rarely contain cancer.

Symptoms

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Heavy periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Infertility
  • Many polyps cause no symptoms

Diagnosis

  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • Saline-infusion sonography
  • Hysteroscopy (definitive, also therapeutic)

Treatment

  • Hysteroscopic removal (especially with symptoms or risk factors for cancer)
  • Watchful waiting for small asymptomatic polyps in some patients
