Dupuytren's Contracture

Dupuytren's contracture is a hand condition in which the fascia under the palm thickens and tightens, gradually pulling fingers (most often the ring and little fingers) into a bent position.

Symptoms

  • Lump or nodule in the palm
  • Thick cord-like tissue extending toward fingers
  • Fingers progressively bend toward the palm
  • Difficulty placing the hand flat
  • Usually painless

Treatment

  • Observation for mild disease
  • Needle aponeurotomy (percutaneous needling of cords)
  • Collagenase injection
  • Surgical fasciectomy for severe contracture
  • Hand therapy after intervention
