Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a very common herpesvirus. Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, but CMV can be serious for newborns of mothers infected during pregnancy and for immunocompromised people.

Important Groups

  • Healthy adults — often no symptoms, or mono-like illness
  • Congenital CMV — leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss in children
  • Immunocompromised — transplant recipients, advanced HIV; can cause severe pneumonia, retinitis, GI disease

Treatment

  • Healthy adults — supportive care
  • Immunocompromised — antivirals (ganciclovir, valganciclovir)
  • Congenital CMV — antivirals for selected infants, hearing follow-up

Prevention

  • Pregnant women — hand washing, avoid sharing food/utensils/saliva with young children
  • Pre-transplant screening
