Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a very common herpesvirus. Most infections are mild or asymptomatic, but CMV can be serious for newborns of mothers infected during pregnancy and for immunocompromised people.

Important Groups
- Healthy adults — often no symptoms, or mono-like illness
- Congenital CMV — leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss in children
- Immunocompromised — transplant recipients, advanced HIV; can cause severe pneumonia, retinitis, GI disease
Treatment
- Healthy adults — supportive care
- Immunocompromised — antivirals (ganciclovir, valganciclovir)
- Congenital CMV — antivirals for selected infants, hearing follow-up
Prevention
- Pregnant women — hand washing, avoid sharing food/utensils/saliva with young children
- Pre-transplant screening
