Chorioamnionitis

Chorioamnionitis is bacterial infection of the membranes surrounding the fetus and amniotic fluid. It usually occurs during labor, especially with prolonged ruptured membranes, and requires prompt antibiotics and often expedited delivery.

  • Maternal fever
  • Uterine tenderness
  • Foul-smelling amniotic fluid
  • Maternal or fetal tachycardia

Treatment

  • IV antibiotics (ampicillin and gentamicin commonly)
  • Delivery (usually expedited)
  • Antipyretics
  • Newborn evaluation and treatment
