Chorea

Chorea consists of involuntary, irregular, rapid, jerky movements that appear to flow from one body part to another. Causes range from medications to inherited neurological disorders like Huntington's disease.

Causes

  • Huntington's disease
  • Sydenham chorea (after strep infection in children)
  • Chorea gravidarum (pregnancy)
  • Medications (dopamine agonists, antipsychotics, contraceptives)
  • Stroke affecting basal ganglia
  • Autoimmune disease (lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome)
  • Wilson's disease

Treatment

  • Treat underlying cause
  • Tetrabenazine, deutetrabenazine, valbenazine for chorea suppression
  • Antipsychotics in selected cases
  • Physical, occupational, speech therapy
