Cardiogenic Shock

Cardiogenic shock occurs when a damaged heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs, leading to organ dysfunction. It's most often caused by a large heart attack.

Emergency

Severe weakness, cold/clammy skin, low blood pressure, confusion, shortness of breath after heart attack or with heart failure. Call 911.

Treatment

  • ICU-level care
  • Revascularization for heart attack (PCI)
  • Inotropes and vasopressors
  • Mechanical circulatory support (IABP, Impella, ECMO)
  • Treat underlying cause
