Alcoholic Neuropathy

Alcoholic neuropathy is peripheral nerve damage from chronic alcohol use, both direct toxicity and from associated nutritional deficiencies (especially B vitamins).

Symptoms

  • Numbness, tingling, burning in feet and hands
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Difficulty walking
  • Autonomic symptoms (sweating, blood pressure, GI problems)

Treatment

  • Stop alcohol (most important)
  • B-vitamin supplementation (especially thiamine)
  • Adequate nutrition
  • Medications for neuropathic pain
  • Physical therapy
