Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon — the large tendon at the back of the heel. Common in runners and middle-aged athletes, it often becomes a chronic degenerative process (tendinosis) if not properly addressed.

Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness above the heel, worse in the morning
  • Tenderness along the tendon
  • Mild swelling
  • Worse with running, jumping, or stairs

Warning

A sudden 'pop' or sharp pain in the back of the lower leg with inability to push off may be an Achilles tendon rupture — needs urgent evaluation.

Treatment

  • Reduce aggravating activity
  • Ice and NSAIDs short-term
  • Eccentric calf-strengthening exercises (especially helpful)
  • Heel lifts or supportive footwear
  • Physical therapy
  • Avoid steroid injections in the tendon (rupture risk)
  • Surgery rarely needed
