Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon — the large tendon at the back of the heel. Common in runners and middle-aged athletes, it often becomes a chronic degenerative process (tendinosis) if not properly addressed.
Quick Facts
- ICD-10: M76.6
- Risk: Rupture if neglected
Symptoms
- Pain and stiffness above the heel, worse in the morning
- Tenderness along the tendon
- Mild swelling
- Worse with running, jumping, or stairs
Warning
A sudden 'pop' or sharp pain in the back of the lower leg with inability to push off may be an Achilles tendon rupture — needs urgent evaluation.
Treatment
- Reduce aggravating activity
- Ice and NSAIDs short-term
- Eccentric calf-strengthening exercises (especially helpful)
- Heel lifts or supportive footwear
- Physical therapy
- Avoid steroid injections in the tendon (rupture risk)
- Surgery rarely needed
